The Grumman HU-16 Albatross (ICAO: U16 / WAKE: MEDIUM) is a large twin–radial engine amphibious flying boat. Created in Second Life by Amok Dynamics, the aircraft was based on the real-life HU-16 Albatross developed by Grumman.

Background

The real-life Grumman HU-16 Albatross was used by the U.S. Air Force (USAF), the U.S. Navy (USN) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), primarily as a search and rescue and combat search and rescue aircraft. Originally designated as the SA-16 for the USAF and the JR2F-1 and UF-1 for the USN and USCG, it was re-designated as the HU-16 in 1962.

An improvement of the design of the Grumman Mallard, the Albatross was developed to land in open ocean situations to rescue downed pilots. Its deep-V cross-section and substantial length enable it to land in the open sea. The Albatross was designed for optimal 4 ft seas, and could land in more severe conditions, but required JATO for take-off in 8-10 ft seas or greater.

AMOK Dynamics' recreation of the HU-16 Albatross features a pilot's heads-up display (HUD), working rear door, retractable landing gear, animated flaps, right/left engine controls, and five paint schemes. The Albatross is the only civilian aircraft to have been manufactured by AMOK prior to the formation of their civilian subsidiary Adventure Air.

Features

  • Pilot's heads-up display (HUD) attachment.
  • Independent engine start-up.
  • Animated components (control surfaces, landing gear, propellers, hatches).
  • Five liveries included.
