Background

Designed by virtual architect Bill Sterling, construction of the SS Galaxy started in February 2007 with the major construction work reaching completion in June of the same year. An enormous project, the vessel was the only full size, full scaled, and full featured cruise ship in Second Life. At 650 meters in length, 110 meters beam, over 32,000 prims, and with 8 decks of living and leisure space, the SS Galaxy was the largest single-build in Second Life. In addition to providing a variety of rooms and suites for rental (one hundred rooms in total), the cruise liner offered an array of amenities and activities on board; shopping, dining, gaming, scheduled parties and dancing.

After almost eight years of continuous operation, the SS Galaxy was dismantled in May 2015 and access to its constituent regions was prohibited. On 28th August 2015, the regions which host the ship were relocated to the south-east of the Honah Lee Estate and the vessel was refitted as a museum by Linden Lab (operating as 'SS Galaxy Preservation Society') and opened to visitation. Owing to its new status as a monument, the vessel's facilities have been drastically reduced and rentals/events are not possible aboard now or in the future.

In January 2020 the SS Galaxy departed Honah Lee waters for the western coast of Bellisseria continent, dropping anchor roughly half a kilometer SSW of the airstrip in Coral Waters.
