The Fokker Spider is an experimental pioneer era aircraft. Created in Second Life by Velocity Aeronautics, the Spider was based on the real-life Fokker Spin (Dutch for "spider") designed by Dutch aviation pioneer Anthony Fokker in 1910.
The Fokker Spin was the first airplane built by Anthony Fokker. The many bracing wires made the plane resemble a giant spider, hence its name Spin (Dutch for "spider"). The aircraft Velocity Aeronautics built is based on the 3rd incarnation of this plane (the first two crashed).
Fokker attracted a lot of attention when he famously flew around the tower of Saint Bavokerk in Haarlem Netherlands on August 31 1911. This airplane won him recognition throughout Germany, which resulted in Fokker building the majority of their aircraft for the First World War.
Anthony was known as "The Flying Dutchman" throughout Europe, and was the most famous aircraft designer for WWI. His planes were flown by some of the greatest fighter aces of the war, such as Manfred Von Richthofen, the notorious Red Baron.
