Built on the site of a former Coffee Lounge and Mall during Spring 2011, MIA was a region-sized airport constructed on top of a large, two-level open platform (hangar/parking facilities available "underground") with two large aircraft elevators providing access between the levels.
The flight deck hosted a single runway and a large terminal building with four gates (with jet bridges). The terminal itself was a modern glass construction with airline check-in counters, a variety of shops, office spaces, and a pub with entertainment facilities. Directly above the terminal were three large helicopter pads and a control tower.
On 24th September 2013, it was announced that the MIA Management Team had decided to sell Miami Airport. With no buyers for the site, the last day of service was on 12th October 2013. Following its official closure on 24th September 2013, Miami International Airport was replaced by the USS Nimitz and an adjacent naval base.
There are no longer scheduled services to and from Miami Airport, as of October 2013.
