The Robinson R22 (ICAO: R22 / WAKE: LIGHT) is a two-bladed, single-engine light utility helicopter. Created in Second Life by Animate Works, the helicopter was loosely based on the real-life R22 Beta II manufactured by Robinson Helicopter.

Background

The real-life Robinson R22 is a light, twin-seat, single reciprocating-engined helicopter with a semi-rigid two-bladed main rotor and a two-bladed tail rotor. The main rotor has a teetering hinge and two coning hinges, the tail rotor has only a teetering hinge. The basic structure is welded chromoly steel tubing. The forward fuselage is made of fiberglass and aluminum with a Plexiglas canopy. The tailcone, vertical and horizontal stabilizers are aluminum. It has an enclosed cabin with side-by-side seating for a pilot and passenger.[1]

The Animate Works R22 is loosely based on its real life counterpart, but is not intended to be an exact replication of it. The aircraft is entirely constructed in mesh, with flight scripting and physics licensed from Patrick Lawson's Real Flight engine. Intended to produce a more realistic flight experience, the script is capable of simulating high altitude flight, auto-rotation, and flared landings. Although the S-300 lacks animated cockpit instruments or a pilot's heads-up display (HUD), flight information is conveyed by floating text over the instrument console and tail-section. The S-300 is available in two variants - a 'land' version with skids (R22GT) and a 'marine' version with floats (R22M2). Both are available for purchase separately or as part of a bundle package.
